Synopsis:
A young Hal Jordan and his brother Jack watch their father, Martin, as he tests a plane at Ferris Aircraft. Something goes wrong, and Martin's plane crashes in a fiery wreck.
First time in the costume
In the present, Hal and his friends are having beers at a bar. Hal's friends tease him for getting fired from Ferris Aircraft and then being re-hired after his mother called to complain. Hal took a pay cut and can no longer fly.
As Hal is taking his friends home, he panics when he drives too close to a roadside billboard and crashes his Jeep. Hal ends up in the hospital, but his injuries aren't bad. His friend Andy, however, is seriously hurt. Hal's ex-girlfriend Carol is quite mad at him, as is her father, Carl, the owner of Ferris Aircraft.
Back at Ferris Aircraft, Hal is testing a flight simulator. Somehow, his simulator crashes through a wall and flies off. While in the air, Hal hears voices talking about a Corps that is without fear, anger, or corruption. When Hal finally lands, he is in the middle of the desert, and a crashed alien spaceship is in front of him. Hal is forcibly brought inside the ship, where he meets Abin Sur, the Green Lantern of Sector 2814. Abin Sur is dying, and he informs Hal that he has been chosen to be his successor. Hal says he isn't interested, but the ring flies off Abin Sur's finger and onto Hal's. Hal panics and bursts out of the spaceship. When he is several hundred feet in the air, he realizes he is flying. Hal then finds a telephone and calls Carol. She is furious, since she thinks he stole the flight simulator. She also tells him that his friend Andy may be paralyzed for life.
While flying, Hal wonders why all this has happened to him. Then Hal crashes through the sign at the site of his car accident.

Quotes:
"The Corps is the root of all order and knowledge. The Corps is the maintainer of life and guardian of truth. Without the Corps there would be only chaos and darkness. The Corps is without fear. Without anger or corruption. It is the creation of a highly-evolved mind and maintained by like beings whose destiny it is to maintain the order of things in the universe. The Corps has battled against the forces of chaos for a millennium. To serve is the ultimate honor. Knowledge is the sum of all reason and perception. Power is force prevailing over mass. Power without reason is chaos. Force without knowledge is destructive. The Corps is ultimate knowledge harnessed to ultimate power. The Lantern is the source.

Synopsis:
Hal dreams that he is flying in space and crashes into a huge lantern. When he wakes up, he finds himself in the desert near the sign he crashed through. Hal hitches a ride to the hospital and visits his friend Andy, who tells him that the police know he (Hal) was drunk when the crash occurred. When Hal hears people coming toward Andy's room, he flies away. While in the air, Hal startles a Ferris Aircraft pilot and nearly causes him to crash. But at the last minute, Hal uses his ring to help the plane land safely.
On the moon, a yellow alien is looking for Abin Sur. The alien makes his way to Earth and finds Sur's body. Realizing that the ring has been given to a new Green Lantern, the alien attempts to pick up its trail.
Hal turns himself in to the police. The officer takes all of his possessions, including his ring. Suddenly, the yellow alien bursts into the jail, killing many of the officers. Hal rushes out of his cell, which has been demolished, and grabs his ring. He expects to easily defeat the alien, but the ring had no effect.

Trivia:
Hal Jordan off-handedly remarks that he has heard of people before who've had powers like his, but not since World War II. He is likely referring to the Justice Society of America, or even more likely, Alan Scott.
Quotes:
"I can't believe this. With that ring I'm probably the most powerful man on earth. I've heard of people with powers like this... from World War II... But Nobody Since. Nobody till me. And here I am... "

Synopsis:
While Green Lantern is fighting with a yellow alien, he wonders why his ring seems to have no effect. As the powerful alien becomes more aggressive, Hal's concentration breaks, and his connection to the ring's energy is broken. Enraged, the alien leaves, wondering what happened to the Green Lantern's trail.
Hal is confused and depressed, and in an effort to get back to what he knows, he hitchhikes to the hospital where his recently paralyzed friend Andy is resting. However, when he arrives, the car is stopped by a police blockade. The police inform Hal that the hospital has been destroyed by the yellow alien, with no apparent survivors. When Hal realizes that the hospital's destruction is his own fault, he realizes that Ferris Aircraft is also in danger.
Unfortunately, Ferris Aircraft has also been destroyed, and knowing that the yellow alien is searching for the Green Lantern, that is what Hal resolves to be. He returns to the crash site of Abin Sur's spacecraft, hoping to find the power battery for his ring. When he discovers a large green lantern, and holds the ring to it, he is pulled toward it by a powerful force, and finds himself back in his Green Lantern uniform.
Hal, confounded, asks the ring what it's doing to him and is surprised to receive a response. The ring explains that he must charge it using the battery every 24 hours. Hal asks about the yellow alien's origins, and the ring reveals that the alien is known as Legion, and has killed four Green Lanterns including Abin Sur. The ring creates a projection of the events leading to Abin Sur's death, but as soon as it ends, the real Legion appears and attacks.
Realizing that the ring has no effect against a the yellow alien, and knowing that he is in a secluded area, Hal decides to use the ship's fission reactors to cause a nuclear blast, in an attempt to defeat Legion.

Synopsis:
In the wake of the nuclear explosion that he caused Green Lantern is surprised to find that he is still alive. He assumes that his enemy Legion must have been vaporized. Realizing his own inexperience, Hal asks his ring to take him to meet another member of the Green Lantern Corps. As he flies past the moon it appears that Legion has survived, and the villain begins following him.
The ring takes Hal to Sector 2813, where he encounters Green Lantern Tomar-Re. Tomar's ring informs him that Legion has been sighted, and together, they warp to Oa. There, Tomar explains the nature of the Guardians, and their struggle to keep order in the cosmos. They meet Salakk who declares that the three must consult the Book of Oa, regarding Legion's origins. The Book tells the story of the planet Tchk-Tchk in Sector 407, where over-population and conquest led the Guardians to lock the planet within in energy field until their desire to expand was quelled.
Tomar-Re explains that Hal will have to stay on Oa to train, rather than returning to Earth with his new-found powers. Hal, however, makes a request to appear at his friend Andy's funeral via green energy-construct, where he reveals to his brother Jack what has happened to him. Hal's ex-girlfriend Carol Ferris nearly sees him, but he disappears immediately.
For the next week on Oa, Hal is rigorously trained by Kilowog, until one morning he wakes to hear an alarm. Tomar-Re explains that the alarm hasn't sounded in a millennium. Oa has been breached by Legion.

Synopsis:
Green Lantern and the rest of the Green Lantern Corps are surprised to discover that Legion has survived a nuclear blast, back on earth. Kilowog orders the Corps to head for cover while he distracts the villain. Unfortunately, Legion manages to kill several Corps members.
The Corps move underground, hoping to use the planet's bedrock as a weapon against Legion. Salakk and Tomar-Re devise a plan to trap their enemy within a sphere of the mineral Oamite. Once again, however, Legion escapes, killing yet another Corpsman.
Legion beats his way through Kilowog and Salakk, into the chamber where the Guardians of the Universe are sleeping. He wakes them, demanding vengeance, and entangling himself in the cables attached to their sleeping pods. Hal Jordan acts quickly, severing the cables and lifting Legion up into the air and carrying him away.
Struggling to think of a way to defeat a yellow enemy, Hal realizes that he can cover the yellow using Oa's muddy terrain. Once Legion is covered in mud, Hal is able to use his Green Lantern Ring to bring his enemy to its knees. But, when Hal seems ready to deliver a killing blow, Legion explains that he is in fact the collective souls of the people of Tchk-Tchk - a race trapped within an energy field on their own planet by the Guardians. Hal is not convinced, knowing that Legion had killed his friends back on earth, but he refuses to kill for Legion or the Guardians.
Hal uses his ring to remove Legion's armour, but an increasingly large creature springs forth and attacks the Corps.

Synopsis:
As Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps struggle to contain the massive, exponentially growing protoplasm that was once Legion, Hal's fear begins to overtake him. Kilowog, Tomar-Re and the other Corpsmen attempt to lift the creature from the planet, only to discover that it has dug itself into the surface of Oa, and is using the Guardians of the Universe's power against them.
Elsewhere, the Guardians look on, concluding that it serves Order better that they abandon their planet and preserve themselves. Hal responds with disbelief to their plan, challenging their cowardice and forming a plan to harness the energy within Oa's Central Power Battery.
Hal remembers the words of Abin Sur, encouraging him to overcome his fear. He flies directly into the Central Power Battery, and emerges surrounded by green flames. He uses the green energy to create a cyclone which pulls Legion from Oa's surface and launches it into space. From there, the rest of the Corps contain it, and take it back to its home planet of Tchk-Tchk, to begin life anew.
Perplexed by his actions, the Guardians question Hal, but he retains no memory of them. The Guardians see that Hal is in many ways an appropriate successor to Abin Sur, and award him the title of Green Lantern of Sector 2814. However, upon his return to Earth, Hal decides that he must do the right thing and turn himself in for drunk driving.
After a time, Hal is released from Gardner A. Broome State Correctional Facility, where he is greeted by his brother Jack, and Jack's girlfriend Dee. Jack reveals that Carol Ferris was impressed by Hal's show of responsibility in turning himself in, and has offered him his old job back.
Later, Hal is flying an aircraft when something goes wrong, in a parallel to the events which led to his father's death. Rather than use his ring to save himself, Hal endeavours to land the craft on his own, and it appears that he does, until it explodes, suddenly. Fortunately, an intact Hal emerges from the cloud of dust and debris, picks up his ring, and moves on.

Synopsis:
Hal Jordan appears in court to take responsibility for the accident he caused while driving under the influence of alcohol. Unfortunately, the judge makes an example of him, and sentences Hal to 90 days in a maximum security facility.
After one last visit from Carol Ferris, Hal is hauled away in a prison truck. However, when he hears about a crime over the police radio, Hal activates his Green Lantern Ring, leaving a projection of himself behind, and then patrolling as Green Lantern, hoping to be back before anyone notices that he's missing.
As Green Lantern, Hal stops a robbery at a savings and loan. He does well, until one of the robbers hits him with something yellow, reminding him of his weakness. He manages to subdue them, building an enclosure for them out of the linoleum flooring. Then he activates the silent alarm, and escapes before the police arrive. He manages to get back into the truck without being noticed, just as it arrives at the state prison.
When Hal is being processed, an officer asks him to remove his ring, and using sleight of hand, he makes the ring disappear. Unfortunately, this annoys the officer, and Hal is ordered to undergo a strip search - but he manages to keep his ring, nevertheless.
In his cell, Hal is frustrated as he is forced to sit through a threatening tirade by his cellmate without using his ring. Strangely, the speech is cut short when his cellmate is stabbed in the back with a shiv. Of course, Hal becomes the prime suspect, and is forced to undergo questioning. Eventually, he is visited by his case worker, Guy Gardner, who hopes to help Hal out of the situation.
On Oa, the Guardians of the Universe bemoan Hal's lack of training, knowing that Kilowog is occupied by recruitment duties. As a replacement trainer, they select Sinestro, who keeps a tight control over his Sector 1417. Sinestro, meanwhile, seems to keep a more tense and perhaps somewhat superfluous control over his sector, requiring celebrations every time he visits its planets. Even so, he is summoned before the Guardians, and given his assignment. Despite his displeasure, Sinestro views it as an opportunity to train someone to keep his style of order.
As Hal struggles with his commitment to serve his time without using the ring, he is suddenly surprised by Sinestro's appearance, and Sinestro is none too pleased himself.

Synopsis:
In a prison cell, Sinestro notifies Hal Jordan that he has been sent by the Guardians of the Universe to train him. Hal is confused, but he's far more concerned about the chance that Sinestro will be seen by one of the prison guards patrolling the hall.
Sinestro fashions a replica of Hal's body with his Green Lantern Ring so that they can leave the prison undetected. Together, they head to Sector 131, where the Khunds, Citadel, and Dominators are planning to form a trade alliance that would give them significant control over their galaxy. Sinestro demands an audience, hoping to show Hal the value of diplomacy. Hal is skeptical, wondering why bad people should be allowed to run free, simply because their control promotes order.
Sinestro's brand of diplomacy doesn't go over well, as he seems insincere, and the three leaders react violently. Seeing that the situation isn't going to be resolved diplomatically, Hal subdues the attackers with his ring, launching them into the sky to teach them a lesson. But while Hal is occupied, one of the aliens catches Sinestro at gunpoint, and Hal must save his life.
Despite the fact that he caused the violent outburst in the first place, Sinestro attempts to salvage the situation by warning that if one Green Lantern could cause so much damage, they should imagine what the whole Green Lantern Corps can do.
Meanwhile, in the state prison, a gentleman thief named Willie has recently been transferred from a minimum security facility because he tried to escape. The guard puts him in the same cell that Hal is meant to be in. At first, Willie is unaware that Hal's body is an illusion, but when he tries to get into his bunk and ends up falling right through it, he is shocked.
A frustrated Sinestro decides to return to Oa to beg to be removed from his assignment, thinking Hal a lost cause. Hal returns to prison, only to find a terrified Willie waiting for him in his cell.

Synopsis:
After surprising his new cellmate Willie, Hal Jordan sees no alternative but to reveal his identity and tell his story. Willie is surprised, but accepting. An exhausted Hal goes to sleep, leaving Willie eyeing his Green Lantern Ring. Willie struggles with whether or not to steal the ring, but moments later, the wake-up alarm rings (much to Hal's dismay), and Willie plays it off.
Later, in the mess hall, Hal realizes that Willie is more famous than he thought, having been a frequent inmate as a gentleman thief. Willie becomes involved in an altercation with another inmate, after accidentally dumping his food tray on his lap. Hal intervenes on Willie's behalf, but his use of a certain phrase alerts the attacker to the fact that they have met before. Hal had busted him just days ago as Green Lantern. The guards attempt to drag both the attacker and Hal away, but Guy Gardner arrives just in time to save him. Guy isn't keen on Hal's friendship with a revolving-door criminal like Willie, but eventually he offers to take on Willie's case in addition to Hal's.
Later that night, Hal and Willie are surprised by the appearance of Sinestro, who has returned to give Hal more training. When he sees Willie, Sinestro decides that the best course of action is to perform a mind-wipe on him, but Hal manages to convince the Lantern to leave his friend alone. Over the next several days and weeks, Hal and Sinestro train in space, while Hal deals with the challenges of living in a maximum security prison.
One day, as Willie is mopping the halls of the prison, he overhears the same inmate that had attacked him talking with another, explaining that he knows Hal is the Green Lantern. He declares his plan to steal the ring, and break out of prison. Unfortunately, Willie drops his slop bucket, and he is found out. Despite Willie's pleas, he is attacked with a shiv.
A guard notifies Hal of Willie's fate, and he rushes to meet his friend. On the way, however, Sinestro arrives, insisting that Hal forsake his friend and continue his training. Hal is reticent, but Sinestro forces him into his Green Lantern Uniform, explaining that his home planet of Korugar may be in trouble.
When they arrive on Korugar, Hal is disturbed by the fact that the citizens obviously worship Sinestro. But as they fly over the capital city, they are shot down by the Korugarians themselves.

Synopsis:
On Korugar, Katma Tui leads a revolution of her people against the Green Lanterns Sinestro and Hal Jordan, begrudgingly with the help of the Khunds.
Sinestro becomes increasingly enraged and unhinged, seeing his previously orderly people rebel. He assumes that they must be under mind control, when it is clear that they have felt oppressed by his brand of order. Hal restrains Sinestro, and calls for backup from the Green Lantern Corps. Sinestro is angered, and attacks Hal, forcing Hal to fight back with superior focus, and beat his trainer into submission.
Eventually, Sinestro relents, but he convinces Hal to flee with him, before the other Corpsmen arrive, and judge their situation too quickly (but rightly). Hal is reticent to throw in with Sinestro, but follows, nonetheless.
Back at the state prison, Hal's friend Willie is visited in the infirmary by his caseworker Guy Gardner. Guy tries to convince Willie to give up the inmates who stabbed him, but Willie is too frightened to say anything. Guy becomes frustrated and leaves, while Willie wishes for Hal's return, so he can warn him of the other inmates' plans to steal his ring and break out of prison.
Meanwhile, Katma Tui, having seen the Lanterns leave, begins celebrating the Korugarians' victory over the Lanterns. But, soon, the Green Lantern Corps arrive, and Katma, believing they are a threat, orders her people to fire on them. The Lanterns notice that Katma is the leader, and separate her from the rebels for questioning. Tomar-Re is surprised to hear that Katma expects the Corps to break her spirit and torture her. When Tomy-Fai notices all of the banners celebrating Sinestro, they begin to understand that he has dramatically exceeded his authority in Sector 1417.
The Corps contact the Guardians of the Universe, and they decide that they have no other choice but to release the Fists of the Guardians.

Synopsis:
Hal Jordan and Sinestro debate what has caused the recent uprising on Korugar, until Hal realizes that he has been gone for two days - which would likely be viewed as an escape by the authorities. Sinestro realizes that a prison might be a good place to hide from the Green Lantern Corps, and suggests that they return to Earth.
In the prison, a crook named Clendon and his cellmate Homey steal a gun from their prison guard, and make their escape. They release all of the inmates in their cell block. Clendon, however, is obsessed with the idea of having the power of a Green Lantern Ring, having realized Hal's secret identity, and he forces his goons to track it down.
When Clendon and his men find Hal's cell empty, they head to the infirmary, where Hal's friend Willie is talking to his caseworker Guy Gardner. Guy assumes Hal has escaped, but Willie - knowing Hal's secret - is unconvinced, though he doesn't know where his friend is. When Clendon hears this, he changes his plans, and takes Guy hostage.
Hal and Sinestro return to prison, immediately noticing that something has gone wrong. They check the infirmary, where Willie is relieved to see them. Hal and Sinestro change into human plainclothes, with Sinestro adopting the appearance of Willie, to Hal's displeasure. To rectify the situation, Sinestro transports Willie out of the prison with his ring - again, to Hal's increasing frustration.
Clendon and his men break into the security surveillance room, and when he sees Hal and 'Willie' on the monitors, he orders his men to release all the prisoners, and start a riot. In the chaos, Hal and Sinestro come face to face with Clendon, who has a gun to Guy Gardner's head. Clendon demands the ring in exchange for Guy's life. Hal complies, and soon finds himself on the receiving end of an energy blast.
When Clendon turns his attention to 'Willie', Sinestro reveals himself, easily plucking the ring from his finger, and returning it to Hal. When they return their attention to Clendon, however, Guy Gardner has the discarded gun pointed at him. Guy's anger management problems come to the fore, and he brutally attacks the criminal violently with his bare hands. Hal manages to restrain him with his ring, though Sinestro seems to think it would have been fair to let Guy kill Clendon.
To Hal's horror, Sinestro mind-wipes Clendon, and then threatens to mind-wipe Guy as well. Hal resists, but as Sinestro begins ranting against his weak-will, his attention is drawn to something else. The Fists of the Guardians have arrived to place them both under arrest.

Synopsis:
The Fists of the Guardians surround Hal Jordan and Sinestro amidst a prison riot. The robots attempt to apprehend Sinestro, but he resists, eventually escaping through the roof. They take Hal at his word that he will remain, and pursue the rogue Lantern. They chase a deranged Sinestro across the countryside, eventually knocking him into a grain silo, where the yellow grains leave him powerless.
Despite the confusion of the nearby Guy Gardner, Hal becomes the Green Lantern, and is forced to deal with the prison riot by himself. He rounds up all of the prisoners and puts them back into their respective cells. Hal apprises the warden of the situation, but before he can be recognized, he returns to his own cell. As he wonders how he'll account for the two days he was missing from his cell, he is suddenly transported away to Oa. Hal is introduced as a witness for Sinestro, to be cross-examined by Tomar-Re before the Guardians, for judgment. Upon Sinestro's questioning, Hal admits that he was trained in the importance of order, and that he is unsure of the amount of deference for the Green Lantern Corps that should be paid by the residents of the sectors they protect. Tomar-Re's line of questioning suggests that Sinestro abused his power in his duties protecting the planet Korugar.
Tomar-Re then calls Katma Tui to the stand, where she testifies of how Sinestro's brand of order oppressed the Korugarans.
