Do not like the layout of this cover, everything looks to be out of proportion. The title seems to small, the Comics Code box seems to big, the Disneyland ad seems out of place, the story title looks to big for the bottom of the page, and the white cover is the worst. Okay, that may be a little harsh but I do love the panel on the first page. Typical Charlton art work having the word ROCKET on the rocket. Also like how Steve put his last name on the piece of space debris.

Steve Ditko cover and one story. Both of the inside covers are blank, couldn't find anyone to buy an ad for there I guess. Nice, that may be the wrong word, picture of Hitler on the first page. Another Heritage pick-up for $105, did I really pay that much for this book? Oh well, it is a Bethleham pedigree and has art work by Ditko and has a Hitler picture and is 48 years old and is a 9.0 with OW/W pages and came with the Beth. certificate, I guess it was worth it.

This is my favorite cover. The art work on the giant robot with the shadowing on its back looks great. On the inside it's a differant story. The splash page doesn't really get me to geared-up to read the story. A date stamp above Mr. Robots head and a slight dust shadow cost this book from being a 9.2 or .4 I think.

Here we have one of those Schomburg covers with all the detail that he's known for. Five people, gun shots, choke holds, spear stabing, and the worlds largest diamond. What more could you ask for? I love the little "Photo-Alarm" hidden away in the lower corner of this cover. Schomburg does some great art work on Doc Strange here as he looks young and buffed and more lifelike than some other covers. Perfectly centered cover with somewhat of a dirty spine (dust shadow?) as can be found on some the Crippen pedigree books.

Great cover showing how we should treat our returning Vets. Have a band playing for them, a fly by. Give them a loan, a job, and a thankyou handshake. Love how Schomburg put the wife, kids, and parents in the background. Best part of the cover is the Nazi helmet the G.I. brings home. This copy is very well centered and would get the higher grade if not for a somewhat dirty spine. This is a Crippen D-copy pedigree comic without any cover markings.

Oh my, Arachne and the Professor don't look to happy that they got on the "L" train, ah, I mean the Hell train. Take a closer look at that conductor and you’ll notice he has a nice little red tail and, oh yeah, a nice set of horns coming out of the forehead. Is he the devil or just a demon? The conductors arm patch reads Inferno Express and his belt buckle reads Abandon Hope. Right next to the orange creator box are a nice little pile of three bullets. Would someone please tell me what that darn clock is doing on a train. One other little note is the pack of cigarettes laying at the base of the clock. Wayne Howard was a very heavy smoker and most likely lead to his early death at 58. I don’t know if you noticed but the title logo has changed with this issues. The title Midnight Tales is now printed on a piece of parchment instead of floating letters. This was purchased on eBay as a group of 6 Midnight Tales issues and listed as from the Mass. Copy pedigree. When I asked for proof he told me his name and said I could ask anybody in the know and they would confirm that he was a big buyer of the Mass. Copy collection. I sent them to CGC with his email and they all came back as Mass. Copy Pedigree copies.

The best thing about this cover is Arachne in fishnet stockings. The best thing about this book is the 2 page centerfold of Arachne without the fishnets. More on that to come. As you’ll notice the stupid grandfather clock is just everywhere they go. Sure, the title of this series is Midnight Tales, and the clock is always at noon or midnight but so what, lose the clock Wayne, lose the clock.
Okay, best thing about this issue is the centerfold pin-up of Arachne. She’s leaning up against her dresser in what must be her bedroom. There’s so many things to notice in this pinup I hope I don’t pass any up. First, how bout that feather duster hanging from the dresser, I’m getting tingles just writing about it. Oh my, that stocking hanging from the dresser drawer just makes me notice her long legs and that slit up the side of her skirt. Okay, enough of that. What the heck is she keeping in that dresser. Check out the top left with the octopus leg coming out, there I go again thinking about Arachnes legs. How about the nice spider mirror and the nice skull belt Arachne is wearing. There’s also a nice skull with a candle in it on the dresser. The bit of humor that Wayne has put in this pinup is in the mirror. Under Arachnes arm in the mirrors reflection, which would be leaning against her back, is a copy of Midnight Tales, with the spelling forward and not in reverse as would be the case here. One last little thing on the pinup is on the right hand side of the dresser is a blue jar with a pink label which has FUBAR Co. printed on it. Not really sure why Wayne would use the acronym FUBAR but it’s there.

WHAT!!! Hold it. Stop the presses!!! We forgot to put the grandfather clock on the cover! For the first time in the series there is no clock on the cover. What relief. What we do get is Arachne dressed in her best Indiana Jones outfit.
Once again no records to go along with this issue. I noticed with this issue the price jumped from 20 cents to a quarter. Inflation in the 70’s was the worst.
I’ve never read this issue. I think it’s about time I did. With the main story titled OOZE it has to be somewhat entertaining I would think. Wait a minute, bottom row, second from left, what’s that cave child pointing at?

Sure, this cover has Arachne on it but this is one cover of the series that I dislike. Just looking at the cover you know that both Coffin and Arachne were supposed to have word balloons and they don't. I want to know what they’re so upset about. Guess I’ll have to read it. This would be a great time to do one of those caption contest and see who could come up with the best word balloons to put on this cover. There's that clock again. It just sits there doing nothing. Give it a purpose, have a ghost in it or at least some spooky eyes starring out of it. Part of the 6 issue Mass. Copy pedigree purchase. Once again, like on the last issue, we see Wayne uses the “Zoo Baby” title. Okay, dislike may be a bit strong a word, I do like the concept that I think Wayne was going for, if the large puppets are controlling the small puppets whose controlling the large puppets, I mean they do have strings attached to then, somebody’s up there pulling the strings. This is the first issue that no longer has a “Featuring” logo box along the bottom edge which I always enjoyed.

Well, here we are with the last issue of the Midnight Tales title, the series carried on for three more issues under the title of Prof. Coffin. The art work suffers a bit on this issue as there seems to be a lot of small detail mIssing compared to other issues. Arachne seems to have kept her younger appearance on this cover and if Howard would have put a little blue and a star on that dress she could have been an all American girl. Now, you would have thought Wayne would have put that grandfather clock on the last issue, but no, it’s missing and as much as I detested that clock I now seem to miss it. There’s a new logo on the bottom right announcing Charlton Publication as the parent company. I should also mention the the price went to 30 cents on this final issue. This was part of my Mass. Pedigree purchase from eBay. As mentioned above the series continued for 3 more issues 10 years later under the title “Prof. Coffin” with all the same characters and used the same covers from the first three issues of Midnight Tales but in mirror images with different colors.

My wife lets me have one wall in the main floor bathroom where I get to display my comics. I use "Frameitagainsam" comic frame and I have room to put three comics up at a time. This issue always goes up in the fall around Halloween time. As for the comic itself, it seems to look a point or more higher then the grade given. We all say that right. It does have two date stamps on the reverse cover (SEP - 1947) and on the front cover, F98, is written in pencil on the left side. Best part of the cover is the owl sitting in front of the harvest moon. The worst parts for me are the fact that the dog only has one eye and I can't figure why Slap is holding the fence gate.
Big Shot Comics #82 Okajima pedigree (Columbia, 1947) CGC VF+ 8.5 White pages. Overstreet 2009 VF 8.0 value = $62; VF/NM 9.0 value = $86. CGC census 6/09: 1 in 8.5, none higher. Paid $48.
The Okajima Collection originated in the midst of one of the darker moments of American history. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor in December of 1941, the knee-jerk reaction of the U.S. Government was to deport all Japanese Nationals residing in the States, and then round up all U.S./Japanese citizens and place them in internment camps. It was at one of these interment camps that a young Japanese/American girl used the four color world of comics as a means to escape her prison surroundings. Many years later, after the collection had been stored away and forgotten by her family, the books were rediscovered at an estate sale. A price was set, and three lucky attendees walked away with one-third of the comics each, forever splitting apart what would become known as the Okajima Collection.
Word quickly spread about the collection after copies made their way to those "in the know." Okajimas have established a reputation for their white pages, which many have attributed to the temperate climate of California. Such whiteness puts this collection far ahead of its many pedigreed peers, as it ranks 8th overall. There are still many copies from the Okajima collection anonymously floating around the hobby, waiting for sharp-eyed collectors to spot their easily identifiable markings.

Across the board, whether they grade out 9.0, 9.4 or 9.8, these issues are newsstand fresh and glossy, with rich colors and either white or off-white to white page preservation. A nice Heritage pick up of a White Mountain pedigree comic. I love this full cover, don’t really know if any more could have been put on it. Love this panel at the beginning of the last story, as a kid it would have caught my attention.

I'm pretty proud to have picked up this mid-grade copy due to the fact it's from the White Mountain pedigree.
Comic presents itself much better than the grade would suggest.
There is a small indent by the hand written 1968 date and a faint spine roll can be seen on the back under the right angle.
I have a hard time seeing Capt. Kirk saying "Howling Comets" as shown in the panel. Seems like something Bones would say or maybe even Scotty.
I also have the #2 issue with the price variant (15¢) in CGC 7.5 qualified (centerfold missing). Very rare book and this is the only CGC graded copy. (6/28/13)
