Set Description
The saga of the Kree-Born Protector of the Universe…
When I was young, Captain Marvel was my favorite superhero comic, all the way up until Jim Starlin MURDERED him in 1982 (just kidding - his finale to Mar-Vell’s cosmic opus is arguably the best story of the Bronze Age).
I was in High School when MGN 1 came out, and I actually wept when I read it. I was disappointed, to say the least that my favorite character was truly dead. Didn’t help my comic buddies teased me about it every day…
To this day, Starlin remains my favorite artist/writer.
Why do I like this character so much?
NOTE: In full disclosure, I cut/ pasted the below excerpt from the registry set description of BarryJames’ NEGA -BANDS-A-MAKE HER DANCE set. (the #2 set below me). I’m really only plagiarizing myself, as I was the author of the set title, set description, and the book descriptions of his set. Further, his set doesn’t actually even exist anymore, as he sold it off on comiclink in 2016.
“I enjoyed the evolution of the title and Mar-vell's development. He went through many changes, though not all just cosmetic - from the ugly green Kree Captain's uniform, to gaining the Nega Bands and a striking new outfit.
It was soon after this that Starlin ushered in a new metamorphosis of Mar-Vell. Eon guided him through a journey of self realization to abandon the way of the Kree Warrior, to gain Cosmic Awareness, and become the Protector of the Universe.
The Thanos War is one of my favorite storylines of the Bronze Age. Not only was Mar-Vell a key player in the Cosmic Cube War, he also had a major impact in the Soul Gem War.
Which brings me last (but not least), to Marvel Graphic Novel #1 - The Death of Captain Marvel. It is my all time favorite Bronze Age story. Starlin scripted the death of the character he gave relevance to, with dignity, class and compassion.
Captain Marvel - Marvel's Spaceborn Superhero, will always remain my favorite title!”
I’m trying to complete the Captain Marvel title in 9.8, as an homage to arguably one of the most underrated heroes in Marvel’s history. I mean, sheesh! He saved the Galaxy numerous times, and was a guest star in many titles. He was even in a comic book Hostess Ad back in the late 70’s!
Thanks for looking!
Update: 6/6/2022 - completed the title in 9.8.
I believe this puts me in rarified air. How many other of the ‘68 Marvel titles in the Registry (Iron Man, Subby, Captain America, Hulk, etc.) have been completed in 9.8? Not too many, I would think. I know that I’m the first and only (thus far) to do it with this particular title.
